Why I don’t agree with munna bhai

Most of you will be familiar with one of the most popular bollywood film MUNNA BHAI M.B.B.S. Its huge success was attributed to its unique story where a gangster is enrolled in a medical college to become a doctor. In this movie there is this scene where the newly enrolled medical students are addressed by the dean of  the medical college Dr asthana which was played on screen by Mr. bomman irani.the dean ask individual students about why they want to become a doctor?? And each of them replies. One girl reply to the dean that she want to be a friend to her patients and this reply makes the dean furious to the girl and munna bhai later on give befitting reply to the dean in the most hilarious way. When I watched this movie for the first time I was quite annoyed at the dean for being so cold and I am sure that most of them who watched the movie will agree.

   Times have passed and I became a doctor myself. I have my own tryst with the medical college, deans, patients, anatomy practicals, viva, exams and results, I have seen it all…a few days back I saw the same movie again and watched the same scene, where the girl was rebuked by the dean and this time I was not that annoyed with the dean.i was rather thoughtful about what he was implying. My own experience with patients was sufficient for me to say that what the dean was saying is true. After a while I found out that I agree with what Dr asthana was saying in the movie “I am not a patient’s friend I am a person who treat them” Though it may sound heartless for others but I am sure that it is the right attitude towards patients by a doctor.

It is all about priorities. A doctor’s priority at any point of time should be the patient’s well being. He should do everything keeping that in mind. If a doctor become a patients friend there is always a conflict of interest from the doctor’s side .there are certain limits for us when we are a friend of someone and there are certain things which we are not comfortable to tell a friend or a relative because we may lose their friendship or broke the relationship in the process but if we have a neutral position with them it is easier for us to deal with the situation. Later on there is a chance that people will realize that we were saying this for their own sake. In case of a friend or a relative we may not want to take that risk because the friendship or the relationship is too valuable for you. I am sure that most of you may disagree with me but I believe this should be the ideal way. a doctor can be friendly to his patients but never become friends.
